Monaco is hosting a preview exhibition until 15th May dedicated to the Japanese film maker, Akira Kurosawa, marking his centenary anniversary in 2010. Organised by the Akira Kurosawa Project’s Executive Committee, this tribute to the life and work of the film maker will be held in several cities across the globe next year.
Posters, kimonos and costumes from the films Ran and Kagemusha, film scripts, magazines and drawings in preparation for movie settings created by the artist are all testimony to his oeuvre. A black and white photo exhibition by Yoshihiro Tatsuki, a renowned celebrity photographer, elegantly evokes the grandeur of the artist. A painter from the age of 17, he directed his first film at 33 and at 41 was awarded the Golden Lion at the Mostra of Venice for Rachomon as well as an Oscar for the best foreign film. The first Japanese film maker to be recognised internationally, he became the pride of his country. The producer of around thirty films, he was also a source of inspiration for western film makers, including Sergio Leone.
The exhibition, which features film screenings and a slide show, offers the public the opportunity to gain real insight into the Master’s life.
