A case of A/HI/NI flu

Monday 20th July 2009-

A suspect case of influenza in a firefighter from Monaco was announced this weekend on Sunday morning, 19th July.

The patient was sent for a specialist consultation at the Princess Grace Hospital where a throat swab was taken. He was prescribed treatment and was allowed to go home as his clinical condition was considered satisfactory.

Biological analyses the results of which were known on Sunday evening, 19th July, confirmed that this was a case of A/H1/N1 flu.

As the patient is required to live in a community and take care of vulnerable individuals as part of his professional work, the epidemiological survey, jointly carried out by the Department of Health and Social Affairs and the Princess Grace Hospital, have identified those who have been in close contact with him.

All such individuals have received prophylaxis treatment with TAMIFLU prescribed by the general practitioner called on site and have been isolated the time necessary for the treatment to take effect, so as to break the transmission chain of the virus.

It is extremely important that the rules of hygiene be observed by everyone:
      - regularly wash your hands,

      - cough/sneeze/blow your nose in a paper tissue and throw it away straight away in a bin.
