"Three questions for Bernard d’Alessandri, Secretary General of the Monaco Yacht Club"
When are the most important periods for Monaco Yacht Club in 2009?
Our Club is going to take on a particular character in 2009 with the 25th anniversary of SAS Prince Albert’s Presidency, the commemoration of the 100 years of Tuiga, our admiral vessel, from 16th-20th September and the 25th edition of the Primo Cup- Credit Suisse Trophy.
From his nomination as President in April 1984 by Prince Rainier III; S.A.S Prince Albert II, who was already very involved with the Club’s life, immediately wished to develop the sporting aspect of the club, reinforcing the training structures of young yachtsmen and creating new events of international stature.
This is why ever since the first year of his Presidency in 1985 both the Primo Cup and the transatlantic Monaco-New York race - with the participation of Biotonus-YCM - have taken place.
How has the Primo Cup evolved during the course of these last 25 years?
The Primo Cup- Credit Suisse Trophy has established itself as the biggest meeting of monotype boats in the Mediterranean and opens the international regatta season.
From the few dozen boats who came in the beginning, today we welcome close to 300 boats over six days of competition, made up of almost 1500 team members representing some 20 nations. It is true that the smoothness of the Mediterranean at this time attracts a great number of Russian, British and Scandinavian competitors, amongst others.
A true testing ground when it comes to on the water organisation, the Primo Cup always shows respect for a pioneering spirit, welcoming new series to each edition, which is previewed on our artificial lake.
It is also for this reason that numerous ship companies like Bénéteau or Swan come at the same time to launch new units: the Primo Cup at the Principality being a place that cannot be ignored in world yachting.
What are this year’s attractions ?
Alongside the traditional series, such as the J/ 24, Surprise, Smeralda 888, Melgres 24 and Mumm 30, the Primo Cup - Credit Suisse Trophy will this year present the Esse 850, for monotypes classified by their speed, taking part in their first official sea regatta in Monaco alongside the Longtze Premier. This new sportboat, built in China at Qingdao (the town where the Olympic sailing competitions took place) has been developed by the America’s Cup French-Chinese team.
We will also celebrate 80 years of the Dragon, by bringing together the discipline’s world elite. Definitely a spectacle to admire from all the Principality’s maritime areas: from the Musée Océanographique to the Larvotto beaches.
