The organisers of the 2008 Herculis Meeting are expecting an exceptional line-up for the event taking place in Monaco on Tuesday 29th July at 7.30 p.m. in the well-known Louis II Stadium. The 22nd edition will be the final meeting for world athletics before the Olympic Games in Beijing, whose events will kick off on 15th August. The Monaco Meeting will also provide a unique opportunity for the public to get close to and applaud the best athletes of the moment.
During the presentation of the event to the press on 29th July, Jean-Pierre Schoebel, Director of the Herculis Meeting said “Athletes need a full stadium and a stadium that vibrates in order to win”. Herculis, which attracted an audience of over 12 000 in 2007, hopes to draw in an even greater number of the public this year to the Louis II Stadium, which is equipped with two new giant screens and where the events will conclude with a firework display.
Together with Stéphane Diagana, the former 400m hurdle world champion and the President of the National Athletics Association, Pierre Weiss, Secretary General of the I.A.A.F. and Bernard Fautrier, Vice-President of the Monegasque Athletics Federation in Monaco, J.P. Schoebel presented the 22nd edition in detail which he considers to be a "warm up session” before Beijing. Twenty events are to be organised on Tuesday 29th July in Monaco. In addition to the 4x100m men and women’s relay, eleven other events will be held for the men (100m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 3000 SC, 110m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles, High Jump, Triple Jump and Shot) and seven for the women (100m, 1500m, 3000m, 110m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles, Long Jump and Pole).
As for the athletes taking part, the organisers are finalising the invitations. Close to 200 athletes should be there on 29th July.
