From 27th February to 1st March, the 8th I.E.P.M. – Club de Monaco conference was held in Monaco. - Nineteen guests together with forty-three members of the Club including former ministers, ambassadors and heads of government, discussed Middle East issues and France’s proposal for the Union of the Mediterranean.

Among the contributors were key figures such as Jean François Poncet, Hubert Védrine, Robert Malley, former advisor to President Clinton for Arab-Israeli affairs, and Amr Moussa, the former Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yevgeni Primakov, former Prime Minister and Middle East expert. The discussions were enhanced by guest speakers including Djamchid Momtaz, legal adviser for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jacques Huntzinger, in charge of the "Union of the Mediterranean" project, Bruno Tertrais, senior fellow at the Foundation for Strategic Research and Dr Azzam Tamimi, Director of the Institute of Islamic Thought in London.

Israelis, Palestinians, Iranians, Americans and Frenchmen exchanged points of view on the various topics discussed, while respecting the opinions of all.

As Michel Rocard pointed out, the “Club de Monaco represents the only assembly in the world to be held by politicians from various countries who listen to each other”.

The I.E.P.M. – Club de Monaco originated from the establishment of the Institut Politiques Méditerranéennes (I.E.P.M.) in February 1999 and the founding of the Club de Monaco in March 2002. A non-profit making association under Monegasque law, its goal is to promote research and debate on all Mediterranean issues. It therefore encourages dialogue between all countries of the Mediterranean Basin, with no exception. An independent institute, the I.E.P.M. – Club de Monaco does not represent the views of any party or state and defines its activities freely.
