|
-09-03-2009-
On 5th March, Alexia Barrier presented her plans to sail around the world solo, flying the Monegasque colours. This great adventure, which combines sport and the environment, will begin next October. Throughout her voyage, Alexia plans to collect data on the temperature and salinity of the water for scientists. The information will provide new clues for research on climate change. A solo sailing trip of this type for the benefit of the planet is a first. The young sailor has also set herself the goal of making her boat an example of CO² zero emission. The 16-metre sailboat will be a true technological laboratory using newly developed systems in terms of alternative energy. Backed by the Monaco Yacht Club, the project will also feature an educational programme geared towards secondary school children. The students will be able to experience virtually the 110-day long tour whilst also discovering the planet.
Alexia Barrier, originally from Antibes, is 30 years old and has already made 5 trans-Atlantic crossings. Her achievements include many extremely encouraging results, including fourth place in the women's match racing world. The odds are high that she’ll successfully meet this challenge of sailing the world solo for the good of the planet. |
