3 questions for Urs Pilz, Artistic Director of the International Circus Festival of Monte-Carlo

What’s new for this 36th edition?

A big new attraction this year is the Varanne troup, intrepid artists who straddle their motorbikes inside metal spheres. A world record is bound to be set as we are hoping to see six motorbikes in one sphere with a diameter of less than four metres! The record will be registered in the Guiness Book of Records.
I’d also like to mention the ventriloquist Marc Métral, an amazing performer, and the daring Cassely act where a man is launched into the air by an elephant and executes a triple somersault before landing on the back of the same elephant – it’s another unique act!

What else can we expect from the Festival?

This year we are having an “Open House” afternoon at the Festival on Saturday the 21st from 2.30pm. Entrance to the Big Top will be free so the public can see an extract of the programme. The highlight of the afternoon will be the animal acts with the trainers explaining step by step how they are achieved. It will be a unique opportunity to discover how gently circus animals are trained.
There are also two exhibitions, one at the Princess Grace Theatre (30 Aubusson tapestries and four scale models of a circus) and the other at the Oceanographic Museum (animal paintings by Christine Chauvain and circus costumes). And then there’s the shop window competition held throughout the Principality.

Finally, why are you launching the “New Generation” concept at this festival?

In 1974, Prince Rainier created the Festival to help support the circus and all the families of artists involved, as the genre was going through a difficult period. Today we feel responsible for the future of circus, but especially young artists who embrace this amazing career. By creating the “New Generation” concept, HSH Princess Stéphanie and her daughter Pauline, who will be President of the Jury, are offering youngsters a chance to perform in a proper circus arena, which doesn’t happen elsewhere. Thus we are ensuring the baton is passed on to the next generation!
