H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco made an official visit to Croatia on 21st and 22nd April 2009.
Upon his arrival in Zagreb in the morning of 21st April, the Sovereign Prince was welcomed by the President of the Croatian Republic, Mr Stjepan Mesic at the Presidential Palace.
After reviewing the troops, the two Heads of State exchanged decorations: the “Grand Order of the King Tomislav” for H.S.H. the Prince and the “Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Charles” for the Croatian President.
After a discussion in private, Mr Mesic and the Sovereign Prince issued a communiqué to the press. Prince Albert II expressed the admiration he holds for this country, at the heart of Central Europe and the Mediterranean Basin. He also spoke of the points in common between the two States: “a rich past, the same passion for the Mediterranean, their commitment to environmental protection, their commitment within the Union for the Mediterranean”. The Prince concluded his speech by declaring that he was convinced his visit would further strengthen the relations of respect and understanding between the two countries, as well as their cooperation not only in the bilateral field but also on the international scene.

A luncheon was then hosted by the Croatian Prime Minister, Doctor Ivo Sanader, at the Government headquarters, prior to a meeting between the Sovereign Prince and Mr Vladimir Seks, Vice-President of the Croatian Parliament, and afterwards by Mr Milan Bohacek, the Mayor of Zagreb.
At the end of the day, H.S.H. the Prince visited the Upper Town of Zagreb and the Cathedral, as well as the high-technology company, the "Ericsson Nikola Tesla Company" accompanied by its President, Ms Gordana Kovacevic.
In the evening, H.S.H. Prince Albert II and the official delegation of Monaco were invited to dinner at the Presidential Palace.
The day's visit enabled the Sovereign Prince to discuss various issues with the Croatian top authorities, in particular support provided by the Principality for mine clearance and the tourism policy of both countries.
In the morning of 22nd April, H.S.H. the Prince left for Rovinj where he was welcomed by Mr Giovanni Sponza, the Town Mayor and Ms Dijana Plestina, Adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. He visited the future Centre for the reintegration of land mine victims, funded partly by the Principality.
In the afternoon, the Sovereign Prince visited Porec, a recognised UNESCO world heritage site and the Euphrasian Basilica.
H.S.H. the Prince was accompanied during his trip by Mr Stéphane Valeri, President of the National Council, Mr Georges Lisimachio, Head of the Prince’s Cabinet, H.E. Mr Franck Biancheri, Government Counsellor for External Relations and for International Economic and Financial Affairs, H.E. Mr Philippe Blanchi, Ambassador of Monaco to Croatia, Mr Zoran Bohaceck, Honorary Consul of the Principality in the Republic of Croatia and Mr Jean Kerwat, Honorary Consul of Croatia in Monaco.
