As part of the Cinema & Literature Forum, which is taking place in Monaco from 19th to 21st March, a pitch workshop was held on 20th March in the Rainier III Auditorium. 450 students from 17 fifth and lower-sixth form classes met Philippe Besson and François Dupeyron for a one and a half hour workshop.
The director and writer first of all exchanged their views on the adaptation of the novel “Les jours fragiles” for the cinema. Then, in an open dialogue, the students questioned them one by one on the novel, its adaptation for the cinema, the position of the writer vis-à-vis the script, the position of the director vis-à-vis the novel... At the end of the workshop the eight winners of the pitch competition were nominated.
Since December, the students have been working on writing a pitch based on Philippe Besson's novel together with their teachers.
A pitch sums up the story of a fictional novel in one sentence or a small paragraph. In other words, a pitch lays out the hook and essential beats of the story.
The competition, organised for the 3rd year running in partnership with the Nice education authority, is aimed at involving fifth-year students in reading a book with the view of adapting it for the cinema. This year students from the following schools entered the competition: Lycée Albert I in Monaco, Pierre & Marie Curie in Menton, Guillaume Apollinaire in Nice, Henri Matisse in Vence, as well as a lower-sixth class from the François D’Assise - Nicolas Barré private school.
The winners receive gifts provided by the publishers and FNAC and join VIP guests on stage at the Forum’s closing evening. Furthermore, the students are able to attend all the events throughout the day.
An excellent initiative by the Cinema & Literature Forum, which develops a taste for reading in students as well as encouraging vocations.
