Centenary of the Ballets Russes - Presse release n°3

      Heritage Days, organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs, will take place on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September 2009 to celebrate “Monte Carlo and the Ballets Russes” within the context of the centenary of their creation.

      As from Saturday 26th September, the public, particularly spoilt this year, will have the opportunity of taking part in cross-border itineraries focused on these theme:

      “Jean Cocteau in Menton”: Discovering the Salle des Mariages (Registry Office) at the Menton Town Hall, decorated by Cocteau and a tour of the Bastion Museum.

      · 9a.m. Meet up at the esplanade of Louis II Stadium (special parking rates at the Stadium car park)
      · 9.30 a.m.: Bus leaves – 10 a.m. : Arrive on site – 10 a.m. – 11.30 a.m.: Guided tour
      · Midday Leave the site and return to Monaco in front of Louis II Stadium

      “In the footsteps of the Czars in Nice” tour of the Russian orthodox Cathedral and discovery of the Parc Impérial district.

      · 1.30 p.m.: Meet up at the esplanade of Louis II Stadium (special parking rates at the Stadium car park)
      · 2p.m. Bus leaves – 3 p.m. : Arrive on site – 3 p.m. – 4.30 p.m.: Guided tour
      · 5p.m. Leave the site and return to Monaco in front of Louis II Stadium

      The highlights of Sunday 27th September are:

      - Creative workshop: painting a stage curtain: creating a collective work of art focused on the Ballets Russes. In front of the entrance of the Quai Antoine I Exhibition Hall – 4, quai Antoine I.

      In the event of bad weather, this will take place at the Théâtre des Variétés – 1, bd Albert I
      from 10h a.m. to midday and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

      - Monegasque National IAA Committee with UNESCO – Visual Arts
      Admission free – Opening times: 10a.m. – 6 p.m.
      Gueorgui Chichkine Exhibition: A tribute to Nijinski and the Ballets Russes.

      - Last day of the exhibition “Etonne-moi!” Serge Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes
      New National Museum – Villa Sauber
      Admission free – Opening times: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.

      The cultural entities involved in the Centenary of the Ballets Russes will also take part in the European Heritage Days and open their doors to all art lovers:

      - Opera House – Salle Garnier
      Commented tour by Mr Michel Steve, architect, at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

      - The Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra
      10a.m. – 1 p.m.: guided tours of the orchestra's premises (musical library, wings, recording studio…) and meeting with the musicians and administrative and technical staff.

      2p.m. presentation of the 2009 – 2010 season, within the framework of the Centenary of the Ballets Russes
      2.30 p.m.: concert in tribute to Diaghilev, conducted by Peter Szuts:

      Anatoli Liadov Le Lac ensorcelé, op.62
      Igor Stravinsky L’Oiseau de feu : suite (1919)

      Concert free of charge subject to the availability of seats. Tickets to be collected from the Rainier III Auditorium on Sunday 27th September from 10 a.m. onwards

      - The Monte Carlo Ballet Company studios

      Guided tours at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.
      Meeting point, Place des Moneghetti, in the garden opposite Emma de Sigaldi’s Joyeux fountain
