06-03-2009-From 3rd to 6th March, fifty international experts are meeting in Monaco. The topic: sustainable development in the Arctic Region in the face of climate change - scientific, social, cultural and educational challenges.
The objective of the seminar, organised by UNESCO and on the initiative of Professor Jean Malaurie, responsible for Arctic Polar issues, is to assess the main challenges that need to be met to ensure the sustainable development of the Arctic. It will bring together researchers in natural science, economists, legal experts, representatives of the circumpolar indigenous people, in addition to representatives from environmental NGOs, industry and the countries concerned.
H.S.H. Prince Albert II, at the opening session, approved and encouraged this UNESCO initiative: “(...) This is the true significance of today's meeting, at least as I see it: building sustainable development thanks to science, as well as collective action, action that is social, cultural and educational in our own countries, less directly concerned, but equally responsible. »
