The Principality of Monaco becomes a Permanent Observer
of the Organisation of American States (O.A.S.)
During the last ordinary session of the O.A.S. Permanent Council, which was held in Washington on 15th September, Monaco officially became the 65th country to obtain the status of Permanent Observer to the Organisation. Founded in 1948, the O.A.S. groups together 33 member states, i.e. the majority of countries from North, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean, except for Cuba (excluded in 1962) and Honduras (excluded in 2009). The purpose of this organisation is to defend democracy and human rights, to ensure the security of the continent, to combat drug trafficking and corruption, as well as to promote trade between the various countries of America.
Accompanied by Mr Lorenzo Ravano, Adviser to the Embassy of Monaco in the United States, H.E. Mr Gilles Noghès, Ambassador of Monaco to the United States and Canada, during his address, spoke of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince’s desire for the Principality to participate actively in international forums, and pointed out that his government’s international cooperation policy is apparent in particular in the countries belonging to the O.A.S. He said that this policy is not only reflected in the growth of bilateral diplomatic and consular accreditations, but also in the intensification of cooperation efforts in priority sectors, such as health, education and the environment, including in Haiti, El Salvador and Costa Rica. Furthermore, the Ambassador pointed out that the Prince Albert II Foundation is actively involved in key environmental projects in Chile, Peru and Brazil. Lastly, H.E. Mr Gilles Noghès said he hoped, that thanks to the involvement of the Principality in the work conducted by the O.A.S, the member states are able to learn more about Monegasque economic realities.
