Euromed Postal is a convention grouping together 18 postal operators on both shores of the Mediterranean*, including the Principality of Monaco. Its goal is to support economic development in the Euro-Mediterranean region by promoting the role of post offices in the economy of the various countries and encouraging cooperation between the players involved in the postal sector.
From a simple exchange forum, the 2007 founding meeting has quickly developed into an ambitious project to standardise postal operations in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
On 28th and 29th September, the second Euromed Postal convention was held in Alexandria, at the invitation of Egypt Post. The meeting was marked by the decision of 14 post offices in the Euro Mediterranean region to create, on the initiative of the French Post Office, a postal community which is called the “Union of Post Offices for the Mediterranean”.
As initiatives increase to form professional Euro-Mediterranean communities (gas, electricity, railway, telecom, bank), the postal sector is one of the first major service networks to become involved in a multilateral programme in this geographical area. Today this framework is necessary in order to improve the quality of communication, enhance services, integrate the networks more efficiently and stimulate the transfer of technology.
Some of the challenges facing postal operators today can only be met within the framework of multilateral and joint cooperation, particularly in periods of economic crisis. Therefore, the postal sector is a key factor for regional growth and a driving force for economic progress and social cohesion. It effectively contributes to regional policies for transport, the environment, urban mobility, public access to information, the development of the economic fabric – in particular small and medium companies - and the promotion of microfinance.
The Director Generals of Euromed Postal, spurred by this joint determination to reinforce cooperation between postal operators, have adopted a declaration. This marks an important step in the process to give concrete expression to the convention set up in 2007.
The issues at stake are important. The hub, in particular, may see the light of day in Tunis and will put an end to the “point to point” traffic currently in place (Algiers-Paris, Algiers-Cairo...), will rationalise and reinforce traffic, make it faster and less expensive and facilitate the quality control of mail and parcels, as well as the transfer of funds.
