Su-Mei Tse, a young artist from Luxembourg, is inviting us on a poetic journey to visit her work on display at the Exhibition Hall Quai Antoine I. The exhibition, based on the documentary film about her sculpture “Some Airing” which was awarded a prize this year by the International Contemporary Art jury of the Prince Pierre of Monaco Foundation, develops like a musical composition. “Every piece works like an instrument or a voice within the whole”, she explains.
The winning sculpture, with a diameter of 9.5 m, suspended from the ceiling and connected to an engine that makes it rotate, was filmed in its place of origin, at the Pommery Estate in Reims. The sound of the blades, omnipresent, resonates throughout the whole exhibition. Su-Mei Tse’s universe revolves around sound, image and the body. Photographs, installations, sculptures, glass, neon in movement, the artist uses the materials according to her message. The Bird Cage, made from luminous and translucent neons for the business district in Luxembourg City suggests the desire for freedom, White Noise evokes the silence of snow but also that preceding music, Sumy, a glass helmet enclosing a shell, refers to personal memory. Each piece has a meaning and articulates around a sort of universal language by which the artist leads us across a minimalist world of extreme precision.
The exhibition organised by the Prince Pierre Foundation is open until 22nd November.
