Emergency Humanitarian Aid for the Horn of Africa

01-08-2011-

In the face of the worst drought the Horn of Africa (Djibouti, Ethiopia and Somalia) has experienced in the last 60 years, the Government of Monaco has decided to allocate 20,000 € to the World Food Programme in order to provide food supplements to the under fives in Ethiopia.

According to the latest estimates of the World Food Programme (WFP), close to 11.5 million people are in need of Emergency Humanitarian Aid not only in the Horn of Africa, but also in Kenya and Uganda.

This region of the world is regularly affected by drought and natural disasters but never on such a scale.

As such, the Government of Monaco has decided to provide support to Ethiopia, a partner country of the Monegasque Cooperation, and in particular for the most vulnerable populations facing water and food shortages: children under the age of five.

Since the beginning of the year, 110,000 € has been allocated to Emergency Humanitarian Aid following the floods in Columbia and the humanitarian consequences of the political crises in North Africa.

Through the WFP, the Government of Monaco has already helped to purchase 78 tonnes of food for the displaced populations of Tunisia, Libya and Egypt.

The WFP, set up in 1962, is the largest humanitarian agency to combat hunger in the world. Accordingly, the Government of Monaco’s development cooperation policy, namely the fight against poverty, is fully in line with the mission and objectives of this UN organisation.
