14th Mondial du Théâtre, 17 th to 26th August 2009 – Principality of Monaco. Press Release n°1
The Principality of Monaco will be hosting the 14th edition of the "Mondial du Théâtre" from 17th to 26th August 2009. Created in 1957 and benefitting from the Government of Monaco’s support, the goal of this event, organised every four years, is to gather together on Monegasque stages “theatre from the whole world in a friendly encounter between cultures and beings”.
The event started off in 1957 with twelve companies responding to the invitation launched by the Principality. Over the years, this figure progressively increased reaching twenty-four in 1997. Therefore, 24 theatre companies from the 5 continents will be performing in their native language on 17th August.
It is important to remember that the goal of the "Mondial du Théâtre" is not to put the performances into competition but to open the stages in the Principality to foreign theatre companies so that they are able to express their vision of the theatre in keeping with their culture and history.
The shows will take place in three different locations: the Salle Garnier, the Théâtre des Variétés and the Princess Grace Theatre. Each show, admission to which is free, will be performed twice on two consecutive days. The performances begin at 6 p.m.: three countries follow on from each other with a 30 minute interval.
In addition to the shows, the “Mondial du Théâtre” features activities in its village – a meeting place for actors and members of the public – set up in the Rainier III Auditorium with various public events:
- Symposia organised every day (except the 22nd) from 17th to 26th August from 9.30 a.m. to midday;
- Workshops organised every day (except the 22nd) from 17th to 26th August from 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The Festival has received the support of UNESCO since 1981. The 14th edition of the “Mondial du Théâtre” is linked to the 60th anniversary of Monaco joining UNESCO. The Festival is also an “associated event” of the Cultural and Technical Cooperation Agency, which was renamed the International Organisation for the French-speaking world in 1977.
