H.S.H. Princess Stéphanie will be carrying out a three-day mission from 9th to 12th December 2009 in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, in her capacity as UNAIDS Roving Ambassador and President of Fight Aids Monaco.
During this trip of a humanitarian nature, Princess Stéphanie will be meeting high-ranking personalities, such as Mr Nelson Mandela, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, the Minister of Health and Mr Michel Sidibé, UNAIDS Executive Director.
Most of the mission will be devoted to field visits, including NGOs supported by UNAIDS and the Principality of Monaco, thanks to action carried out by the Office of International Cooperation and on site by the General Consulate of Monaco in South Africa.
Princess Stéphanie will also visit the suburb of Soweto to meet the NGOs that help orphans and vulnerable children.
The Republic of South Africa is the second country most affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The country has the highest number of HIV positive people in the world (5.7 million from a population of 49 million). Life expectancy has dropped from 65 to 49 since the virus first appeared in the country.
