Three questions for Françoise Gamerdinger, Deputy Cultural Affairs Director

What are the highlights for this year’s annual Heritage Day, the theme of which is Monaco and sustainable development?

For the 16th edition, the Cultural Affairs Department has chosen to show the public the different approaches Monaco is taking towards sustainable development.

Visitors will learn more about the key people and entities involved in managing our drinking water, sorting out waste for recycling and wastewater treatment.

For the second consecutive year, a fun way of discovering Monaco is being organised, can you tell us what it involves?

A questionnaire on heritage will be handed out to the public, with questions and puzzles designed to engage people with the theme. This year’s project, adopted by the Council of Europe, is inviting the young people of Monaco to get more involved. Over 5,000 questionnaires will be available from various participating venues, with prizes for those who prove to be the best investigators !

How many sites will be open to the public and which are the main ones?

In total, 36 sites will be open to the public. As well as the usual sites, we are opening up the cistern at the palace, the archbishop’s gardens, a waste recovery unit and the plant that pre-treats waste water, as well as organising a boat trip to learn more about Monaco’s marine ecosystem.
Also of note is the cross-border itinerary on Saturday 15th which this year is a walk from La Turbie to the Fort de la Revère, so people can discover the Grande Corniche’s nature park.
